Default Haven't played since 05'. Need a bit of info

First off let me apologize if this is the wrong place to put this post... or for that matter the wrong site to put this post.

Any ways I was hoping if any of you may help me with a few questions I have about GW. I played the game around launch years ago but I don't exactly remember much about it nor have I kept up with the expansions and whatnot. I recently bought GW trilogy and created a ranger (We'll see how long this lasts) but I was wondering which expansion most people play nowadays.

Also, given the age of the game... what is a decent way of finding a good guild? I plan on putting some serious time into my toon in about a week so I can hit max level in no time.

And It seems either I didn't noticed what was going on with pvp when i played in the past because i didn't do it or a lot has changed, because on pvxwikia i see a lot of different categories for their pvp builds. if anybody could give a Very brief rundown of what the pvp scene is like in this i would be more than grateful.

Anyways I hope all of this wasn't a bother. I couldn't find any good info on the web

Greetings and Welcome Back! First off, I would find your original account and use that as extra storage.

Which expansion is most played? I see people in all 3 campaigns as well as Eye of the North. Most are out doing specific things to advance their HoM but you can unite with a Pug in some areas.

Guilds advertise on Guru so give that a shot. Otherwise, you can hang out in Kamadan, Lions Arch or Kiaiang Center and LFG. Not sure how much luck people have with random invites but you can give it a whirl.

I don't do PvP so no advice there. We have one alliance member that about all he does is Jade Quarry so I do know that there are some interest in PvP.

I'm not sure where you started your character, my son perfers to begin in Factions and then jump to Nightfall as soon as he can for hereos. He then goes onto Eye of the North fo more heros and those extra Asura, Norn and Deldrimore skills. I prefer to start in Nightfall as the Factions storyline just does not appeal to me. I work on it when I have to but avoid Factions otherwise.

Not sure if this helps much but you should be able to get to level 20 in a short time.

And if you are not having luck connecting with a good guild, you can also try Embark Beach.

When you last played, PVP consisted of, I believe just RA/TA, Heroes Ascent and GVG.

TA is gone, RA still exists. It's full of syncers though (people syncing entering in order to play as an organized team)

Codex Arena is a closed deck PVP format (limited as to what skills can be loaded) and it's pretty dead.

Jade Quarry, Fort Aspenwood and Alliance Battles were introduced in Factions. JQ and FA are like RA in terms that you don't form a team before entering. JQ is full of bots but you can at least get matches without ridiculous wait times, not sure about FA, and AB is dead.

HA and GVG are still around. Good luck with that...

Since no one has mentioned it yet, pvxwikia is old, no longer maintained, and contains a large amount of vandalism. The relevant GW wikis are these:

Non-official: http://www.guildwiki.org/Main_Page
Official: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
gwpvx (for builds): http://www.gwpvx.com/PvX_wiki

Avoid any wikis with 'wikia' in the url.

first off all welcome back.

Second. finding a good guild is kinda tricky. There are a lot of good guilds out there, but lso a lot of bad guilds.

Best advice I can give is to avoid the really big guilds. They are very massive and will give you very general advice. Also avoid high end guilds at first that focus on terms like sc (speed clears), DoA-runs and UW-runs (both are high end area's). Best is to talk a bit with an advertising officer in kamadan or on the guild recruitment section on this website and look for a reasonable size guild thats active, plays for fun, have some active and experienced players and are willing to help a newbe (cause in a way you are).

Although getting to lvl 20 is considered tutorial it isn't a goal on itself.

When you want to start in PvP best place is to start in random arena's. Although your teammembers are random and can be a bit aggressive and abusive, it is the best way to find out if PvP is your thing. good alternatives are jade quarry or fort aspenwood in factions. Although there is a bit less newbe hate, the concept of the arena is a bit more tactical (to explain, random arena's is very basic kill 'm all, the two factions types of PvP are also with random teammates, but 8 instead of 4 and there are multiple tasks, like capture mines, protect npc's, defeat other opponents, defeat opposing npc's).

Rangers are pretty nice in PvP, in PvE they are considered a bit less usefull. Although it's very good possible to finish the game with them and do it again in hard mode. You'll find limited possibility's in builds in the harder parts of the game.

Hey guys thanks a lot. The info is really helpful. One last question though. Might there be a skill calculator that is often used So I can see how I might want to tweak my own build?

I don't know of one. Personally I use pvx for inspiration and the wiki for creating builds http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page. Then through gameplay, and more roaming of the wiki, I tweak the builds to perfection.
